Khnum
ORIGIN: Egypt
POWERS: Khnum is one of the earliest-known Egyptian neteru, worshipped for over 3 thousand years, was originally the god of the source of the Nile, later known as a creator god. His name was derived from the ancient Egyptian word' khnem' meaning unite, join or build. He was often depicted as a ram-headed man or as potter working on his wheel and sometimes holding a jar with water flowing out referring to his link with the source of the Nile. Khnum was called the 'Father of Fathers and the Mother of Mothers'. As "The Great Potter", Khnum was believed to have created the “first egg of the world” then molded the sun, all living beings and even gods from the clay of the Nile River and then held them high so the light of Ra could shine upon them and give them life. In addition to creating the body (khat) and the “ka” (spirit) of each newborn child, he could bless the child as depicted by many pharaohs. The story of mankind deriving from clay was repeated throughout the world in many civilizations with some modifications. As the God of Fertility Khnum was often associated with the Nile River and the life-giving waters that flowed from it. He was believed to have the power to bring rain and increase the fertility of the land, ensuring a bountiful harvest and abundant life. Khnum was also associated with regeneration and renewal, believed to have the power to transform and revitalize the natural world, bringing new life. He was believed to watch over and guide humanity, helping to keep them safe from harm and ensuring their protection, prosperity and well-being. Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid in Giza, full name was Khnum-Khufu, meaning ‘Khnum is my protector’.
