Hatshepsut
White Alabaster
ORIGIN: Egypt
POWERS: Hatshepsut was the longest reigning ancient Egyptian queen, remembered as one of the most significant and powerful pharaohs of ancient Egypt, who ruled during the 18th dynasty (1479–1458 BC), which was a time of great prosperity and cultural achievement in ancient Egypt. Unprecedented for a woman at that time, she was one of the few and most famous female pharaohs in ancient Egyptian history who ruled with the full authority of a male king, wearing the traditional male regalia. Her reign challenged traditional gender roles and norms, and her legacy as a female pharaoh continues to inspire and fascinate even today, despite attempts by subsequent pharaohs to erase her from history. Hatshepsut was known for her extensive building projects, trade, diplomacy and political stability. She built many impressive monuments and temples throughout Egypt, the most famous being the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Her successful trade expeditions helped to enrich Egypt's economy and raise its international profile. She created new trade links and showcased Egypt’s power and influence abroad by sending expeditions all the way to the land of Punt (modern-day Eritrea), bringing back valuable goods such as incense, exotic animals, and precious woods. She maintained peaceful relations with neighboring kingdoms and promoted economic growth and cultural development within Egypt, leading to a period of relative peace, political stability and economic prosperity during her reign. After her death, the throne went to her stepson Thutmose III who had almost all of the evidence of Hatshepsut’s rule eradicated. Therefore, scholars of ancient Egypt knew little of Hatshepsut’s existence. Her mummy was later discovered in 2007 and can be seen at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo today.
