POWERS: Ra is one of oldest and most powerful and important deities in the Egyptian pantheon. Ra is often depicted as a man with a hawk head and a sun disk on his head. He was believed to be the sun god, creator of the everything and all forms of life, the source of life and sustenance for all living beings and the ruler of both the living and the dead. He was often considered to be the King of the Gods. As the sun god, Ra was believed to have complete control over the sun and its movement across the sky, he could also be the physical sun itself, as well as the day. As the sun, Ra travels across the sky daily and was swallowed by the goddess of the night sky, Nut. He travels across the treacherous underworld, emerging victorious as the morning sun the next day. Ra was also associated with life and fertility, and was believed to have the power to grant and sustain life. Over time Ra's mythology began to merge with those of other gods, such as Amun, Atun, Aten, Khepri, Khnum and Horus. Ra was represented in many forms including as a man with a falcon head and sun disk headdress, a scarab, ram head and several other depictions. Amun, god of the air eventually merged with Ra, to become the supreme and all powerful Amun-Ra, one of the most significant gods in the Egyptian Empire. Amun-Ra was the source of divine power for the pharaohs, representing courage, strength, confidence, leadership and productivity, he was worshipped as a protector of the pharaohs and their kingdoms. Amun-Ra also came to be worshipped outside Egypt. It is believed that Amun-Ra had influence on the Greek civilization and his existence created the belief in Zeus being the King of the Gods. Amun-Ra is often depicted wearing a crown with two straight feathers and a sun disk at its base. In Ancient Egypt, feathers symbolized Ma'at, the central value of Egyptian culture, meaning harmony, balance, truth and justice. As such, Ra was seen as a symbol of order and harmony in the universe.
